The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun the screening of commissioner nominees submitted by the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The exercise commenced on Monday morning as nine nominees arrived at the Assembly complex around 10 a.m. to appear before lawmakers.
Those screened include Datonye Alasia, Tonye Bellgam, Temple Nwofor, Peters Nwagor, Mrs. Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, Lekue Kenneth, Otonye TKD Amachree, and Amairigha Hart.
During the session, each nominee was called to the podium to introduce themselves, outline their qualifications, and respond to questions from members of the Assembly. The proceedings were broadcast live on Arise TV and monitored by journalists.
Governor Fubara had earlier forwarded the list of nominees to the Assembly on March 5, 2026, following his decision to dissolve the State Executive Council as part of efforts to reconstitute his cabinet.
Ahead of the screening, the Assembly issued a formal notice directing the nominees to submit 40 copies of their curriculum vitae, photocopies of their academic credentials, and proof of tax compliance. The notice was signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi.
The screening comes amid ongoing political developments in Rivers State after the restoration of democratic governance. President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month state of emergency in the state on September 17, 2025.
The emergency rule, which began on March 18, 2025, led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Assembly. The measure followed a prolonged political crisis in the state linked to a power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
With the return to normal governance, the current screening process is seen as a key step toward rebuilding the state’s executive council and stabilising political administration in Rivers State.
