The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday declared the Ondo South Senatorial District seat vacant following the recent appointment of its occupant, Jimoh Ibrahim, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Akpabio made the announcement during plenary, stating that the development necessitated the declaration in line with constitutional provisions.
He subsequently called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to organise a bye-election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat.
The Senate President also directed the Clerk of the National Assembly to formally communicate the resolution of the Senate to the electoral body for immediate action.
The vacancy marks a new phase for the Ondo South Senatorial District, as preparations are expected to begin for the conduct of the bye-election to determine a new representative.
