The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has directed students to proceed on a mid-semester break following escalating protests over a newly introduced transportation system.

In a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the decision was approved by the university’s Senate after demonstrations by students reportedly turned unruly.

According to the statement, the protests, which were initially staged early on Tuesday to express dissatisfaction with the transport policy, degenerated into actions that disrupted movement within and around the campus, including the blocking of major access roads and harassment of other road users.

The university said several efforts were made to calm the situation through dialogue, but concerns over the safety of students, staff, and members of the public persisted.

“As a result, and in the interest of restoring order and ensuring safety, the Senate has directed that students proceed on a mid-semester break with immediate effect,” the statement read.

While the release initially indicated a three-week break, the management clarified that students are to remain away from campus for two weeks, during which engagements with relevant stakeholders will continue to address the issues raised.

The institution urged parents and guardians to make necessary arrangements for their wards, while advising students to remain law-abiding and use the break responsibly.

The university management also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of students and the restoration of a peaceful and conducive academic environment.

Further updates, the statement added, will be communicated in due course.
