An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced two men to death by hanging after finding them guilty of armed robbery.
The convicts, Ojo Olasunkanmi, 31, and Obamoyegun Dele, 31, were initially arraigned on January 31, 2020, alongside Adewale David, 36, who died while the case was ongoing. They faced a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy and armed robbery, which was amended on March 25, 2025.
According to the charge, the defendants, armed with guns and axes, carried out the robbery on August 11, 2018, at Oganganmodu, off Igbole Road in Ido Ekiti. During the attack, they reportedly dispossessed residents of valuables including mobile phones, a Toyota Sienna space bus, a DVD player, and cash.
One of the victims, Bosede Ojo, told the court that the incident occurred around 1 a.m. when the assailants posed as officials of the NDLEA and demanded entry into the premises. Upon refusal, the attackers reportedly scaled the fence, forced their way in, and robbed occupants of their belongings. The matter was later reported to the police.
The prosecution, led by O.B. Ayeleso, presented nine witnesses and tendered several exhibits, including the defendants’ statements, a black axe, 15 SIM cards, mobile phones, the stolen vehicle, and photographs.
The defendants testified in their own defence through their counsel, Opeyemi Ogunremi and Marcus Oluwatoyin, but did not call additional witnesses.
Delivering judgment, Justice Bamidele Omotoso held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and resolved all issues against the defendants.
“Accordingly, the defendants are convicted as charged,” the judge ruled. “For conspiracy and armed robbery, the sentence of this court is that the defendants… be hanged by the neck until they are dead. May God have mercy on your souls.”
