The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested an Abuja-based house agent, Hajia Adama Adamu, over an alleged property fraud amounting to N288 million.
The agency made this known on Wednesday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that the suspect was apprehended by operatives of its Ilorin Zonal Directorate following a petition.
According to the commission, Adamu allegedly collected the money from a complainant, Alhaji Tanko Yawale, under the pretense of helping him secure a property in Abuja. The property in question is said to be located at House 31, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro.
The EFCC further revealed that after receiving the payment, the suspect reportedly failed to provide valid documentation for the property and later became difficult to reach, raising concerns that led to a formal complaint.
Property fraud continues to be a major issue in Nigeria’s real estate sector, particularly in cities like Abuja, where unsuspecting buyers are often deceived by individuals posing as legitimate agents.
The commission has in recent months stepped up its crackdown on land and housing scams, urging Nigerians to thoroughly verify property ownership and documents before making any financial commitments.
