The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, on Wednesday held a closed-door meeting with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, at the Government House in Bauchi, fuelling fresh talks about a possible defection.
Yilwatda arrived alongside Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf. However, none of the participants spoke to journalists after the meeting, leaving details of their discussions undisclosed.
Sources within the Government House suggested that the visit may be part of efforts to convince Mohammed to reconsider his reported plan to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and instead align with the APC.
The meeting comes just a day after the governor, who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, hosted a delegation from the African Democratic Congress, led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
Speaking after that earlier meeting, Mohammed pointed to the ongoing crisis within the PDP as a major reason behind his consideration to leave the party. He noted that multiple reconciliation efforts had failed despite setting up committees at both national and state levels.
According to him, consultations are still ongoing with different political platforms, but the ADC has so far appeared to be the most welcoming option.
He also hinted that his political camp feels sidelined within the APC, which has influenced their current preference for exploring alternatives. Nonetheless, he maintained that discussions are still in progress and no final decision has been made.
