The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has ordered the temporary suspension of commanding officers along the Lagos-Seme border corridor over allegations of extortion by personnel.
The directive follows viral online reports accusing immigration officers of harassing and extorting travellers along the busy international route.
Probe Ordered
In a statement issued by the service’s spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, Nandap condemned the alleged misconduct and ordered an immediate investigation to identify all officers involved.
“She unequivocally condemns the actions depicted in these reports, as such conduct is unacceptable and stands in direct violation of the core values… of the Service,” the statement read.
The number of affected officers and specific commands involved were not disclosed, but the service assured that appropriate disciplinary actions would be taken promptly.
Strategic Border Under Scrutiny
The Lagos-Seme corridor, linking Nigeria to the Republic of Benin, remains one of the busiest and most critical cross-border routes in West Africa, handling significant volumes of trade and passenger movement.
The route has long faced complaints of harassment and extortion by officials, with recent videos reigniting public concern.
Commitment to Accountability
Nandap, who assumed office in 2024, reiterated her commitment to discipline and transparency within the service, warning that acts capable of undermining public trust would not be tolerated.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in its mission to serve with integrity, discipline, and professionalism,” the statement added.
The agency also urged members of the public to report misconduct through its official communication channels, including social media platforms and dedicated contact lines.
The development signals renewed efforts by authorities to address corruption and restore confidence in border operations.
