The campaign organisation of Dr Akin Ogunbiyi has dismissed as false a viral video circulating on social media, which allegedly portrays him as claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu doubted the capacity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win the next Osun State governorship election.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the group described the video as “manipulated and misleading,” insisting that Dr Ogunbiyi’s comments were taken out of context and distorted to misinform the public.
According to the statement, the 30-second clip failed to capture the full context of remarks made during a meeting with party leaders and stakeholders. It clarified that Dr Ogunbiyi was addressing political developments surrounding alleged moves by Governor Ademola Adeleke to align with the APC amid growing concerns over his re-election prospects.
The campaign noted that Dr Ogunbiyi had referenced efforts by former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and other APC leaders, who reportedly met with President Tinubu to affirm the party’s readiness to reclaim power in the state.
During the meeting, the APC delegation was said to have outlined its strategy for victory in the August 15 governorship election, while also accusing the Adeleke administration of undermining federal initiatives and misrepresenting the President to the people of Osun.
The statement further claimed that President Tinubu rejected alleged attempts by certain interests to facilitate Governor Adeleke’s entry into the APC and has since maintained support for the party in Osun. It added that the President endorsed the emergence of Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji as the APC governorship candidate.
The campaign also disclosed that during a recent meeting between Oyebamiji and the President, the APC candidate presented an economic development plan for Osun State, which reportedly earned him Tinubu’s confidence and backing ahead of the election.
Taking a swipe at Governor Adeleke, the Ogunbiyi campaign accused his administration of resorting to propaganda due to what it described as dwindling public support and fear of electoral defeat.
It questioned the governor’s performance in office, alleging that despite receiving nearly ₦1 trillion in revenue over the past 40 months, the administration had little to show in key sectors such as education and agriculture.
The statement claimed that tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions had risen significantly, while food prices had worsened due to what it termed inadequate investment in agriculture.
It further alleged that while about ₦90 billion had been spent on non-essential expenses within three years, only ₦7 billion was allocated to agriculture.
The campaign concluded that growing dissatisfaction among residents had led to increased support for the APC and its candidate, Oyebamiji, expressing confidence that voters would back the party in the August 15 governorship election.
