Tinubu-signs

President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, located in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. To support the project, the Federal Government has also approved a take-off grant of N15 billion.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who noted that the decision aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021. The law allows the institution to operate multiple campuses across the country.

According to the statement, the N15 billion intervention fund will be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). The funds will be used to develop essential infrastructure, including academic buildings, student hostels, and key training facilities for cadets.

Onanuga explained that the choice of Erinja as the site for the new campus followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders. Those in attendance included the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

The meeting considered several critical factors such as student capacity, funding availability, quality assurance, and the long-term training needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently expanding through ongoing recruitment efforts.

The Presidency expressed confidence that the new campus would enhance police training, improve institutional governance, and contribute to strengthening national security through modern policing education.

Until now, the Nigeria Police Academy has operated a single campus in Wudil, Kano State. However, the 2021 Act empowers the institution, subject to approval by the National Universities Commission, to establish additional campuses, faculties, and other academic units as necessary.

There have also been calls for decentralisation. In June 2025, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to establish police academy campuses in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, in line with the Act.

The Academy, which began in 1988 using temporary facilities in Kano and Kaduna, was later moved to its permanent site in Wudil in 1996. It became a degree-awarding institution in 2012 after recognition by the National Universities Commission, marking its status as Nigeria’s 37th federal university.

Currently, the Academy offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in law enforcement and related fields, including law, sciences, social sciences, management, and the humanities.

The Ogun campus will be the first of its kind under the 2021 multi-campus framework.
