Lecturers at the University of Jos have commenced an indefinite strike following the non-payment of their March 2026 salaries.
The Chairman of the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Jurbe Molwus, confirmed the development, stating that the industrial action took effect on Wednesday, April 8.
“We are on strike, and we are not going to work until we are paid,” Molwus said.
In a statement issued to members, the union directed lecturers to withdraw from all academic and administrative activities, including lectures, examinations and statutory meetings, until their salaries are paid.
“Dear comrades, after following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, conduct of examinations and statutory meetings as our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience,” the statement read.
The union blamed the delay on the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, noting that the university’s bursary department had already completed its part of the payment process.
“It seems our patience is being taken for granted by those who are determined to frustrate industrial harmony,” the statement added.
ASUU further warned that compliance with the strike directive would be strictly monitored, stating that a strike monitoring team had been activated to ensure adherence.
The development adds to ongoing concerns about salary delays and labour disputes in Nigeria’s university system, which have frequently disrupted academic activities in public institutions.
