The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to intensify efforts to bring back members who defected from the party and reposition it as a strong opposition force.
Wike made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the party’s NWC, led by Abdurahamon Mohammed, at the PDP national secretariat, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, on Friday.
He reaffirmed that the PDP remains Nigeria’s main opposition party, dismissing claims by other political groups, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to that status.
According to him, a party can only be regarded as a leading opposition force if it has recorded electoral victories.
The minister also pledged his continued support and loyalty to the party’s leadership, noting that unity and collective effort would be crucial in rebuilding the PDP after its internal challenges.
“We have gone through a crisis, and we are gradually overcoming it. It won’t be easy, but with hard work and sacrifice, the party can move forward,” Wike said.
He urged the leadership to reach out to former members who left due to uncertainty about the party’s future, encouraging them to return.
“Make deliberate efforts to bring back those who defected. Engage them and assure them of their place in the party. Nigerians will ultimately prefer a strong and credible PDP,” he added.
Wike also commended the party’s leadership for resuming activities at its national headquarters following a court ruling that restored its access to the building, describing the move as a sign of readiness to reposition the party.
In his response, PDP Chairman Mohammed welcomed Wike’s visit, describing it as a morale booster for the party. He assured that the new leadership is committed to strengthening the PDP and preparing it for success in the 2027 general elections.
He said the party’s leadership would work closely with members and aspirants nationwide to reclaim its political relevance and win elective positions across the country.
Also speaking, the PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, praised Wike for his consistent support, both morally and financially, noting that his contributions have remained vital to the party’s activities and visibility.
