A former Minister of Power and governorship aspirant, Adebayo Adelabu, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 Oyo State governorship election, distancing himself from moves to impose a consensus candidate within the All Progressives Congress.
Adelabu made this known on Tuesday during a meeting with members of the party’s state executive council at the APC secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan. He said his visit was to formally notify party leaders of his ambition while reaffirming his loyalty and commitment to the party’s growth.
The former minister expressed confidence in his chances of securing the party’s ticket and ultimately winning the election, insisting that the process must remain open and transparent.
His position comes amid reports that some party leaders have endorsed Sharafadeen Alli as a preferred candidate for the 2027 race. However, Adelabu’s supporters have rejected the endorsement, describing it as unauthorised and potentially divisive.
Adelabu, who recently stepped down from his ministerial role, said his resignation was to allow him focus fully on his governorship ambition. In a letter addressed to Bola Tinubu, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and contribute to reforms in the power sector.
Addressing party executives, he firmly rejected the idea of a consensus arrangement, warning against any attempt to sideline other aspirants.
“Don’t let anyone hijack our party. I am ready to follow due process. No individual can unilaterally declare himself a consensus candidate over others,” he said.
He added that any agreement reached without the involvement of party executives, aspirants, and key stakeholders would be invalid.
Adelabu also assured party members that, if elected, his administration would prioritise inclusiveness, unity, and economic growth across all parts of the state.
Responding, the Oyo APC Chairman, Moses Adeyemo, commended Adelabu for his consultative approach, describing him as a committed party member with the capacity to lead the party to victory.
Other party officials present at the meeting included Deputy Chairman Taofek Lamidi, Secretary Fatai Adenine, Women Leader Felicia Adekemi, Youth Leader Olalekan Glory, and Legal Adviser Sunday Aborisade.
The development highlights growing political manoeuvring within the Oyo APC ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
