Former Chelsea FC captain Cesar Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a distinguished 20-year career across Europe.
The veteran Spanish defender confirmed his decision in an emotional farewell message shared on social media, saying the time had come to begin “a new chapter” in his life.
Azpilicueta admitted that despite preparing himself for retirement, writing the farewell message was still difficult.
“Dear football, today I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer,” he wrote.
“After so many years of living my dream, I feel that the time has come to open a new chapter in my life.”
The 36-year-old reflected on the many individuals who influenced his journey throughout two decades in football, thanking teammates, coaches, and club staff for helping shape his career both on and off the pitch.
Azpilicueta enjoyed a successful career playing for several clubs, including CA Osasuna, Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla FC.
He also represented Spain at international level, earning 45 caps and featuring in several major tournaments.
However, the defender enjoyed the most successful spell of his career at Chelsea after joining the London club from Marseille in 2012.
During his 11-year stay at Stamford Bridge, Azpilicueta made 508 appearances and became one of the most decorated players in the club’s modern history.
Popularly nicknamed “Dave” by Chelsea supporters, he won two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two Europa League trophies, the UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
He also captained Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021, cementing his status among the club’s legendary figures.
Known for his consistency, versatility and leadership qualities, Azpilicueta successfully transitioned from an attacking full-back into a dependable centre-back and influential dressing-room leader over the course of his career.
