Gunmen on Friday invaded Ahoro-Esinele community in Oriire Local Government Area and abducted the principal of a secondary school alongside an unspecified number of students.
The incident occurred between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. at Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, according to the Oyo State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed in a statement on Friday that the attackers stormed the school premises and whisked away several students as well as the school principal, Mrs Rachael Alamu.
According to the statement, a resident also reported that one of the teachers was shot during the attack, although the severity of the injury could not be immediately confirmed.
“The source also said a teacher was shot during the attack, though the extent of the injury has not been confirmed,” the statement noted.
Olayinka added that the gunmen escaped through a forest reserve bordering the community after allegedly fleeing with the principal in her vehicle.
Residents reportedly said the distance of the nearest police station delayed swift intervention during the incident.
The police command further stated that the Commissioner of Police had deployed officers to the area for assessment and rescue operations.
Details of the number of abducted students and the condition of the injured teacher were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report.
