The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, Professor Gbenga Ibileye, has introduced a “Vice Chancellor for a Day” initiative aimed at rewarding outstanding students and promoting leadership and academic excellence.
The initiative was announced as part of activities marking the Vice Chancellor’s first 100 days in office.
Ibileye, who assumed office as the university’s fourth Vice Chancellor on February 16, 2026, disclosed this in a statement personally signed on Tuesday in Lokoja.
According to him, the programme is designed to give deserving students symbolic leadership responsibilities within the institution.
“The symbolic ‘Vice-Chancellor for a Day’ initiative has been launched to confer the symbolic leadership of the university on a deserving student, a celebration of academic excellence and a statement of the administration’s investment in its students,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted achievements recorded during his first 100 days in office, noting that attracting new funding remains one of the administration’s major successes.
Among the developments listed were the securing of a N3bn intervention from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences.
He said the centre would support advanced research, postgraduate training and skills development in emerging technologies.
Ibileye also disclosed that the university secured full accreditation from the National Universities Commission for eight academic programmes, including Mass Communication, Computer Science, Education Mathematics, Integrated Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Sociology.
He noted that the accreditation strengthens the institution’s academic standing and confirms the quality of its teaching facilities and personnel.
On infrastructure, the Vice Chancellor said sanitation and water facilities at the Felele Permanent Campus had been improved through the renovation of lavatories, rehabilitation of boreholes and construction of additional water supply facilities.
He added that the university’s Vision Plan 2026–2031 had reached the White Paper stage and had been presented before the Governing Council.
According to him, five pillar cohort committees submitted reports that were harmonised into a single roadmap by a White Paper Committee for formal adoption.
Ibileye further stated that students in the pioneer set of the College of Health Sciences had passed their Basic Medical examinations and advanced to Basic Clinical Training.
He said the students were on course to become the first medical doctors to complete their full training within Kogi State.
