The Osun Open Local Government Project, popularly known as OsunOpenLG, has celebrated its second anniversary, highlighting major achievements recorded in promoting transparency, accountability and citizen participation in local governance across Osun State.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Executive Director of Insight Initiative for Community and Social Development, Jare Tiamiyu, the organisation described the anniversary as a significant milestone in its efforts to strengthen openness and improve governance systems at the grassroots level.
According to the statement, OsunOpenLG was officially launched on May 24, 2024, with support from the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund, with the aim of improving access to information, encouraging civic participation and advancing accountability within local government administration.
The organisation noted that over the last two years, the initiative has continued to reshape conversations around transparency and good governance by creating platforms that allow citizens to engage more actively with governance processes at the local level.
One of the key achievements highlighted in the statement was the development of what it described as Nigeria’s first Artificial Intelligence chatbot focused on open governance issues at the local government level. The innovation, according to the organisation, was designed to improve citizens’ access to governance information, strengthen public engagement and simplify interactions around accountability mechanisms in local councils.
Tiamiyu stated that the introduction of the AI-powered platform reflects the growing role of technology in deepening civic participation and governance reforms in Nigeria.
“As we mark this important milestone, this anniversary edition serves not only as an opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments so far, but also to reflect on the journey ahead,” the statement read.
The organisation added that the successes recorded in the past two years reaffirm the importance of transparency, inclusiveness and accountability in achieving sustainable grassroots development.
It further pledged to continue advancing innovative solutions, strengthening partnerships and driving initiatives aimed at empowering citizens and improving governance systems at the local government level.
