Como 1907 and AS Roma secured places in next season’s UEFA Champions League on a dramatic final day of the Serie A campaign, while traditional heavyweights AC Milan and Juventus FC were left disappointed.
Como sealed a historic qualification with an emphatic 4-1 victory over US Cremonese, who were relegated to Serie B following the defeat. The result, combined with Milan’s shocking 2-1 home loss to Cagliari Calcio, confirmed Como’s first-ever appearance in Europe’s elite club competition.
Managed by former Spanish midfielder Cesc Fàbregas, Como completed a remarkable rise from the lower divisions to the Champions League, finishing fourth on the league table.
Roma also secured their return to Europe’s biggest club competition after a comfortable 2-0 win over already relegated Hellas Verona FC. The victory guaranteed third place for the capital club, marking their first Champions League qualification since 2019.
The achievement is seen as a major success for coach Gian Piero Gasperini and the Friedkin family, owners of Roma, who have overseen the club’s steady progress in recent seasons.
However, the story of the day belonged to Como, a club that had never featured in European competition and was playing in Italy’s third division before being acquired by Indonesian company Djarum in 2019.
Elsewhere, Juventus were forced to settle for a place in next season’s Europa League regardless of the outcome of their derby clash against Torino FC. The match was delayed by more than an hour due to security concerns following violent clashes between rival supporters before kickoff.
Despite taking the lead through Dušan Vlahović in the 24th minute, Juventus could not improve their league position enough to secure Champions League qualification.
Milan’s collapse proved costly. The Rossoneri had started the day in third place and looked on course for qualification after Alexis Saelemaekers scored inside two minutes.
But goals from Gennaro Borrelli and Juan Rodriguez completed a stunning comeback for Cagliari, condemning Milan to another disappointing end to the season amid growing frustration from supporters over the club’s ownership and direction.
