Fresh concerns have emerged over the fitness of Lionel Messi ahead of the upcoming World Cup after the Argentine star was substituted during Inter Miami CF’s Major League Soccer clash against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
Messi was taken off in the 73rd minute after appearing uncomfortable and holding the back of his left leg during the encounter played under difficult wet conditions in Miami. The 38-year-old, however, walked off the pitch without assistance before heading straight to the dressing room, reducing fears of a serious injury.
Speaking after the game, Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos explained that the decision to withdraw the Argentine captain was mainly precautionary.
According to Hoyos, Messi appeared fatigued due to the heavy pitch conditions, and the coaching crew decided not to take unnecessary risks with the veteran forward. He also noted that the club was still awaiting a full medical assessment.
Messi is widely expected to represent Argentina national football team at the forthcoming World Cup, which would mark his sixth appearance at football’s biggest tournament and equal the all-time record. However, the football icon has not officially confirmed his participation.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has carefully managed his playing time while dealing with occasional hamstring-related fitness issues. Argentina’s coaching staff are expected to monitor his condition closely before announcing the final squad for the tournament.
