A 36-year-old man, Charles Ekuma Eze, has died after he was allegedly stabbed during an argument in Etayip Community, Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah.
According to the police, the incident was reported to the Ikom Police Division at about 10:37 p.m. on July 4 by Ndifon Ndifon, the Task Force Chairman of Asse-Asin Community, and Felix Agbor, the community’s Youth Leader.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Michael Ndifon, allegedly stabbed the victim in the right side of his rib with a dagger during a heated argument at about 5:46 p.m. on the same day.
“The victim was immediately rushed to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, for medical treatment but was later referred to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment,” Eitokpah said.
The police spokesperson said the deceased’s body has been deposited in the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
He added that the suspect had been arrested, while the suspected murder weapon had been recovered and kept as an exhibit.
“Investigation is ongoing, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet investigation,” he said.
Eitokpah assured residents that the command would provide further updates as the investigation progresses and urged members of the public to remain calm while the law takes its course.
