Roberto Mancini is set for a sensational return as head coach of the Italian national team after reaching an agreement with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to take charge of the Azzurri once again.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Tuesday that Mancini has agreed to lead Italy’s new project after the federation’s planned appointment of Andrea Pirlo collapsed at the final stage.

Pirlo had been expected to take over the national team, but the deal was called off before contracts were signed following concerns over his commercial ties with a Russian betting company, a move reportedly halted by Italian Olympic Committee president Giovanni Malagò.

With Pirlo’s appointment abandoned, the FIGC turned back to Mancini, the man widely credited with rebuilding Italy into one of Europe’s strongest footballing nations during his previous spell in charge.

Mancini first took over the Azzurri in 2018 following Italy’s shocking failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. He transformed the national team with an exciting, attacking style of football, restoring belief among supporters and leading Italy to an unforgettable UEFA Euro 2020 triumph.

Under his leadership, Italy went on a record 37-match unbeaten run, won the European Championship by defeating England at Wembley, and re-established themselves among the continent’s elite.

Beyond the national team, Mancini boasts an impressive managerial résumé, having won league titles with Inter Milan and Manchester City. He famously guided City to their dramatic first Premier League title in 2012 before also enjoying successful spells with Galatasaray and Zenit Saint Petersburg.

The 61-year-old now returns with the responsibility of steering Italy back to the top after a disappointing period for the four-time world champions.

His immediate task will be rebuilding the squad, restoring confidence and preparing the Azzurri to challenge for major honours once again as Italy look to reclaim their place among international football’s leading nations.
