The Federal Government has affirmed that its economic reforms are progressing as planned, despite skepticism expressed by the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

The government emphasized that it does not require Sanusi’s endorsement to validate its policies and urged him to acknowledge the government’s economic strides despite his “shift in loyalty.”

In response to Sanusi’s remarks at a Lagos event on Wednesday, where he criticized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris said there was no need for divisive rhetoric stemming from personal estrangement from government officials.

The Minister stated: “The Federal Government takes note of the recent comments by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, on the economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. While the Emir acknowledged some noble initiatives, he claimed he could not support them for personal reasons.”

Idris continued, saying that while Sanusi, like any Nigerian, has the right to express his views, it was concerning that someone from an institution dedicated to integrity would publicly admit to withholding the truth out of personal interest.

“The country is at a crucial juncture of transformation,” Idris explained. “Many of the government’s policies align with Sanusi’s past advocacy. These reforms are essential for addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, and the temporary difficulties they bring are a necessary outcome of decades of poor economic management.”

Idris pointed out that the government’s reforms are already showing positive results. He highlighted the unification of exchange rates, which has boosted investor confidence and increased foreign reserves, enhancing Nigeria’s resilience against external economic shocks.

The removal of the fuel subsidy has unlocked resources for critical investments in sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Projections from institutions like the World Bank indicate a positive economic trajectory, reinforcing the government’s path to recovery.

He also emphasized that the reduction in Nigeria’s debt service-to-revenue ratio has created a more sustainable fiscal framework for future generations.

Idris expressed disappointment in Sanusi’s reversal on policies he had previously supported. “It is unfortunate that reforms, widely recognized as essential by experts—including Emir Sanusi—are now being subtly criticized due to a shift in loyalty.

Given his background in economics, Sanusi has a responsibility to support reforms aimed at national progress rather than undermine them because of personal or partisan reasons.”

The Minister called on Sanusi to rise above personal interests and focus on the broader good of Nigerians. “We urge all leaders to unite in pursuit of the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria. The challenges we face require collaboration, not distractions,” he added.

Idris concluded by urging Nigerians to remain confident in President Tinubu’s administration.

“Rebuilding Nigeria demands unity, focus, and sacrifice. The government is committed to economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity, and we are open to constructive dialogue with all stakeholders. Now is the time for unity, not division. Together, we will create a better future for Nigeria.”
