The National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has accused certain individuals of sabotaging the implementation of local government autonomy.
Hakeem Ambali, the National President of NULGE, made the statement in an interview on Sunday.
On July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling upholding the financial autonomy of the nation’s 774 local governments, declaring that governors no longer have control over funds allocated for the councils.
Recently, the Federal Government cited the ongoing profiling process for individuals designated as signatories to the local government accounts as the reason behind the delay in direct fund disbursement to the LGs.
Commenting on the situation, Ambali stated, “Saboteurs are actively working to hinder the full implementation of local government autonomy. Despite the Supreme Court’s significant ruling, it is unfortunate that we are still struggling with this issue at such a crucial time.”
He added, “It is vital that the president takes the lead in ensuring the autonomy is fully realized. We appreciate that he initiated the lawsuit, and we urge him not to back down now.”
