The Federal Government has warned the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to be vigilant in preventing terrorists and criminals from entering the country. The government emphasized that electronic visas (e-visas) should not be issued to individuals fitting this category.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, issued the directive on Friday in Abuja during the opening of a two-week intensive training session on electronic visa applications for 162 selected immigration officers.
He stated, “You must ensure that terrorists and criminals are blocked from entering Nigeria. Do not grant them e-visas.”
“We are a nation committed to welcoming visitors for tourism, business, and economic engagement. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we are determined to disrupt the status quo and achieve extraordinary progress. This is a critical moment—either we embrace this change or risk missing out.”
Tunji-Ojo addressed the 162 officers, urging them to be committed, honest, and exemplary in their roles. “It is your responsibility to end the frustrations faced by people applying for a visa to Nigeria. Integrity is key—compromise will not be tolerated.”
He further clarified, “I stand for what is right and have zero tolerance for corruption. Failure to fulfill your duties will result in removal and serious consequences. This is a national responsibility that demands integrity at all levels.”
The minister also highlighted the important role of the Nigeria Immigration Service in promoting ease of business, tourism, and investment opportunities.
“Beyond border security, you are the gatekeepers to Nigeria’s growth and development. The image you project will have a lasting impact on how the world views our nation.”
