Chief Bode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has sounded an alarm over the handling of the Rivers State emergency declaration and the allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, warning that these events could threaten the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement issued in Lagos, George drew parallels between the current political climate and the events that led to the collapse of Nigeria’s First and Second Republics, expressing concern that the current presidential system might be more detrimental than military rule.

George was especially critical of the use of a voice vote to approve President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency in Rivers, deeming it unconstitutional. He also condemned the effort to recall Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate, calling the move disgraceful.

He stated, “What we are witnessing today mirrors the actions that led to the downfall of our past republics. The actions of the APC-led government are eroding the foundations of our democracy.”

George also highlighted the withdrawal of security from an elected speaker in Lagos and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and several lawmakers in Rivers. He criticized the National Assembly for supporting these actions without the requisite approval.

On the handling of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations, George expressed his disapproval of the Senate’s response, calling it a national embarrassment.

He lamented the lack of an independent investigation into her claims and denounced her Senate suspension as a political maneuver.

He added, “The attempt to recall Natasha using state resources is a clear manipulation. How are these signatures being verified? How did these documents find their way to INEC so quickly? This is nothing short of blatant manipulation.”

George also drew attention to the government’s attempts to block Akpoti-Uduaghan from visiting Kogi State, where she was greeted by a large crowd despite official efforts to limit her activities. He argued that such actions have caused Nigeria international embarrassment.

In closing, George warned that the current political environment, which he likened to military rule, could have disastrous consequences for the country in the 2027 elections.

He also expressed concern over growing tensions in Bayelsa, where Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike plans to attend a rally despite opposition from local government authorities.

George concluded by stating that these events reflect a troubling pattern of lawlessness and disregard for democratic values, which could further destabilize Nigeria.
