At least 51 people have been killed in an attack on the Zikke and Kakpa communities in Plateau State’s Bassa Local Government Area.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, has left many injured, with several being evacuated to the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the violence, urging the state’s leadership to find a lasting solution to the persistent communal conflicts. “We cannot allow this devastation and tit-for-tat attacks to continue. Enough is enough,” Tinubu said in a statement.

The President has instructed security agencies to investigate the crisis and identify those responsible.

Tinubu also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Plateau State government in promoting dialogue, social cohesion, and accountability to permanently resolve the conflict.

This latest attack is part of a larger pattern of violence in Plateau State, where inter-communal conflict has claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.

The violence is often attributed to ethno-religious tensions between Muslim herders and mainly Christian farmers, as well as climate change and agricultural expansion.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association has condemned the killings and called on the Federal Government to declare Fulani militants a terrorist organization. Meanwhile, troops have rescued 16 passengers who were kidnapped along the Jos-Mangu road, engaging the kidnappers in a gun battle and forcing them to flee.
