Kwara State has achieved a remarkable feat by winning the 2025 edition of the President’s Senior School Debate Competition, the first time the state has ever emerged as the national champion in the prestigious contest.
The 26th edition of the debate, held from June 24 to 27 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, featured top-performing secondary schools from across Nigeria. Kwara’s team put up an outstanding performance throughout the competition, eventually defeating strong contenders including Rivers State in the final round to clinch the top prize.
Speaking on Friday while receiving the triumphant students at his office, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, hailed the victory as a product of the state government’s unwavering commitment to revamping the education sector.
“This historic win is a direct result of the comprehensive reforms introduced by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (CON), who has made the transformation of public education in Kwara a top priority. It is gratifying to see these investments yielding tangible outcomes,” the commissioner stated.
Dr. Olohungbebe described the victory as a collective achievement and commended the dedication of teachers, principals, coaches, ministry officials, and all other stakeholders who played a role in preparing the team for success.
“This is more than a win for the students, it’s a celebration of the passion and resilience of our educators and the commitment of everyone working tirelessly behind the scenes. Their efforts have paved the way for this landmark moment,” he said.
He also urged the students to remain focused and continue striving for academic and personal excellence, adding that they have become shining examples and proud ambassadors of the state.
The winning team was led by teacher Babatunde Amina Idowu and consisted of Moshood Kamaldeen (Government Secondary School, Ilorin), AbdulAzeez Aishat (Nawarudeen Secondary School, Offa), AbdulAzeez Mutasir (St. Anthony Secondary School, Ilorin), and Usman Maryam Enyo (Ilorin Grammar School, Ilorin).
