Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked a place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a tense 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana on Tuesday.

The match, played with high intensity, saw Rasheedat Ajibade give Nigeria the lead in the 45th minute from the penalty spot. South Africa suffered an early blow when striker Hildah Magaia was forced off due to injury in the 26th minute and replaced by Thubelihle Makhubela.

Linda Motlhalo equalised for South Africa in the 60th minute, also from the spot, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Just when extra time looked inevitable, Michelle Alozie scored the winning goal in the 94th minute after being set up by Esther Okoronkwo.

Substitutions and physical play dominated the closing stages, but Nigeria held their composure to secure the win.

With this result, the Super Falcons continue their strong record in African women’s football and move one step closer to another continental title.
