The Osun State Government is making significant strides in tackling climate change and promoting renewable energy through inclusive, data-driven, and grassroots-based interventions, Consultant to the state Government, Professor Chinwe Obuaku, revealed.
Speaking during an exclusive session on Insightful Moment Jare Tiamiyu, Prof. Obuaku noted that the Osun State Renewable Energy Development and Regulation Policy is anchored on climate adaptation and nature-based solutions aimed at improving the lives of indigenes and protecting the environment.
“When I assumed office, there was nothing on ground,” she revealed. “The first step was mapping and identifying vulnerable regions, especially flood-prone areas. This was achieved in collaboration with members of the academic community within Osun state. We needed data to guide our approach because while you can deny opinions, you can not deny data.”
She emphasized that a comprehensive capacity assessment was carried out, revealing that the state already had the manpower and technical knowledge needed for progress.
“With this data, we conducted multiple town hall meetings and community sensitization programs to inform and involve the public in policy formation.” She said.
The consultant commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for his unwavering support and commitment to environmental sustainability, describing the support as the fortress of the achievements recorded in sector.
“Governor Adeleke has created the space for us to act and impact lives meaningfully,” she said.
“He deserves recognition for championing key initiatives like the Imole Solar Lantern Project, which provides solar-powered lanterns to students, especially those preparing for critical examinations such as WAEC. Many of them previously relied on candles and lanterns, which negatively impacted their vision, a challenge I personally experienced.”
She also disclosed that the state had launched an electric motorcycle (e-bike) initiative aimed at reducing petrol dependence. “With a subsidized payment plan and plans to establish public charging stations, the project is designed to ensure inclusiveness and provide cleaner, more affordable transportation options.”
Osun State has established a Recycling Hub under the Waste-to-Wealth program, targeting job creation and environmental cleanup. The initiative, run in conjunction with the Osun Waste Management Agency (OWMA), includes designated waste collection points across the state. “Our aim is to convert waste into economic value, promoting financial empowerment for residents,” Obuaku explained.
She applauded the OWMA sanitation team and ongoing collaborations with the Ministry of Information and market associations, including Iya-olojas, to raise environmental awareness among traders and community members.
On afforestation efforts, she pointed out that the government of Governor Adeleke has been actively planting trees across major streets in Osun in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment. “However, not all trees are suitable for all areas,” she said. “We consult experts to determine what species are appropriate for each environment. Reforestation and tree planting are technical and policy-driven.”
Prof. Obuaku urged citizens to take ownership of the climate and energy policies by participating actively and offering ideas or support where necessary. She called on the media to play a more active watchdog role in tracking environmental and energy-related government actions.
“No donor will fund a project unless you can show due diligence,” she stated. “Within six months, we’ve built a compelling investment model, and supporters are now coming on board.”
She encouraged residents to use designated recycling points instead of dumping waste indiscriminately. “Environmental protection starts with citizens. Speak up when you see practices that endanger our surroundings. We need everyone on board.”
