In a move to boost tourism and promote cultural heritage in Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has declared free access to the newly renovated Olumo Rock Tourism Complex in Abeokuta from now until the end of September 2025.

Speaking at the official commissioning ceremony on Thursday, Governor Abiodun said the initiative aims to encourage the public to explore and appreciate the state’s rich cultural legacy. He described Olumo Rock as more than a geological formation, calling it a powerful symbol of resilience and identity for the Egba people.

“For centuries, Olumo Rock has offered protection and a sense of belonging during times of conflict. Renovating it goes beyond physical development, it’s about restoring pride and reconnecting with our cultural roots,” he said.

The upgraded complex features a modern art gallery showcasing portraits of notable Nigerians, a gazebo, restaurants offering both local and continental cuisine, shops selling adire fabrics, and a new power supply system to support elevators and other amenities.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that tourism remains a key part of his administration’s ISEYA development agenda. He noted its potential to drive economic growth, attract investment, and generate employment.

“This transformation turns Olumo Rock into a modern heritage destination. The new entrepreneur zones will provide opportunities for artisans and creatives to benefit from increased visitor traffic, boosting local commerce and empowering our youth,” he added.

He also announced plans to concession the facility to a reputable operator for effective management, assuring that similar tourist developments are underway across the state.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, praised the governor for revitalizing the site, saying it will attract more visitors and increase tourist engagement.

Also speaking at the event, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, highlighted Olumo Rock’s historic and spiritual significance. He recalled its role as a military lookout in ancient times and a place of refuge and answered prayers.

Chief (Mrs) Nike Okundaye, CEO of Nike Art Gallery, expressed optimism that the facelift would boost international tourism. She pledged to attract global art enthusiasts to celebrate Nigeria’s culture and heritage, while creating jobs and new opportunities for locals.

“In two years, this site will become the leading cultural destination in Nigeria,” she stated.
