The Kwara State Police Command has refuted a viral social media video claiming that residents of Ganmu Ahileri, near Babanla in Ifelodun Local Government Area, have deserted their community due to frequent bandit attacks, labeling the area a “ghost town.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, the command described the claim as false and intended to incite fear and panic among the public.
The police confirmed that an isolated criminal incident occurred on July 31, 2025, when five armed men attacked a group of travelers who had suffered a flat tire near Ganmu village. The assailants killed two individuals Alhaji Abdulrazak Ewenla from Ajia village and Jimoh Audu of Ganmu and abducted three others: Kazeem Ajide, and two others identified only as Wahidi and Mufutau.
According to the police, the victims were en route from Lagos to Babanla when they were ambushed. In response, security operatives comprising police officers, military personnel, and local vigilantes were swiftly deployed to the area.
The command clarified that the viral video footage showing a heavy security presence in the community was misinterpreted. Rather than indicating desertion or fear, it captured a coordinated effort by law enforcement to stabilize the area, reassure residents, and intensify rescue operations.
“The situation is under control, and normalcy has returned,” the police said, adding that efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims and apprehend the culprits are ongoing.
Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, reassured the public of the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.
