The Federal Government has announced the closure of no fewer than 13,597,057 social media accounts over offensive content and violations of the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms.

According to the 2024 Compliance Report submitted by operators of major platforms such as Google, Microsoft, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X, the crackdown was part of efforts to curb harmful online activities and safeguard users.

The Code of Practice, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), sets standards for online safety and accountability.

The report, titled “Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report: Highlights on Social Media Platforms’ Efforts on Online Harm Protection,” revealed that a staggering 58,909,112 offensive posts were taken down across multiple platforms within the period under review.

In a statement released on Wednesday, NITDA spokesperson Hadiza Umar commended the compliance efforts of Google, Microsoft, and TikTok. She also disclosed that the agencies received 754,629 complaints from users, which led to 420,439 contents being taken down and later re-uploaded after successful appeals.

“The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to protect users in line with the Code of Practice and their respective community guidelines,” the statement read.

NITDA emphasized that the government remains committed to strengthening collaboration with tech companies, civil society, and regulators to enhance digital literacy, bolster safety measures, and build trust in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
