The World Institute for Peace (WIP) has called on the Federal Government to intensify its efforts toward tackling Nigeria’s deepening insecurity, warning that the misuse of public funds allocated for security purposes continues to endanger lives and undermine peacebuilding efforts.
In a press statement issued on Friday, November 7, 2025, and signed by its Executive Director, Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi, the Institute urged state governors to ensure that security votes disbursed to them are used responsibly, transparently, and strictly for the purpose of promoting peace and stability in their respective states.
Omotoyosi noted that while state governments receive substantial allocations under the security vote system, the real impact of these funds depends on how effectively and accountably they are managed. He cautioned that diverting such funds for political or personal use amounts to betraying public trust and worsening insecurity across the country.
“The World Institute for Peace warns that when security funds are misused, citizens pay the price,” Omotoyosi said. “Funds meant to safeguard lives must not become instruments of corruption or political manipulation.”
The WIP Executive Director further emphasized that transparency and accountability in the management of security votes are vital to restoring citizens’ confidence in government institutions, adding that effective resource utilization remains a cornerstone of sustainable national security.
He maintained that ensuring public trust through open and responsible financial practices would help curb insecurity, foster peacebuilding, and strengthen Nigeria’s social stability.
Omotoyosi, therefore, called on both federal and state governments to adopt stricter oversight mechanisms on security expenditures, insisting that the protection of citizens should always take precedence over political interests.
