The Presidency has appealed to Nigerians to help enforce President Bola Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of police escorts from VIPs across the country.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, made the call during an interview on TVC on Sunday. He emphasised the government’s determination to implement the policy and encouraged citizens to document any breaches.
According to Bwala, “If you see any celebrity, private individual, or anyone who still moves around with police escorts contrary to the president’s directive, try to capture it—whether in a photo or video.”
He clarified that the order does not strip every government official of police protection. Some key office holders, he said, will retain necessary security arrangements.
However, in such cases, security may be provided by the State Security Service or Civil Defence rather than the police.
“It could be the SSS or Civil Defence offering protection. But police officers have no business escorting VIPs under this directive,” Bwala added.
The move is part of ongoing efforts by the administration to optimise police manpower so officers can focus more on public safety and core policing responsibilities.
PUNCH Online earlier reported that President Tinubu instructed that all police officers assigned to Very Important Persons nationwide be reassigned to regular duties.
