Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to remember the country’s political leaders in their prayers, admitting that politicians are largely responsible for the nation’s challenges.
Obi made the appeal on Sunday during a thanksgiving service at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, held as part of activities marking Day Seven of the Oyo State at 50 celebrations.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Oyo Affairs, the former Anambra State governor bluntly acknowledged the role of the political class in Nigeria’s struggles.
“I want to make a request of Nigerians. Please remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria. No other person,” Obi said.
He explained that Nigeria’s difficulties are not the result of poverty or lack of resources but of poor leadership and misuse of public funds.
“Nigeria is not a poor country; it is poorly governed. Pray that God touches our hearts to use public money for public good. That is what is required. Once this is done, Nigeria will be good,” he added.
The Oyo State at 50 celebration, which began on January 26, is expected to end on February 3 with a gala night and dinner at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Agodi. The event will also honour all 17 former governors of the state.
