Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of Ghana on the country’s 69th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the strong diplomatic and cultural relationship between both nations.
The message was conveyed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement issued on Friday through the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. The congratulatory message was addressed to Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Ghana gained independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957, a development Tuggar described as a historic turning point in Africa’s struggle for freedom. He noted that the country’s liberation inspired many African nations, including Nigeria, to pursue sovereignty and self-determination.
According to him, Nigeria joins Ghanaians in celebrating the milestone while acknowledging the country’s contributions to democratic governance, regional integration, and peaceful development across Africa.
Tuggar highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties between both countries, noting that Nigeria and Ghana share similar experiences and aspirations for peace, prosperity, and African unity.
He added that both nations have continued to play significant roles in promoting democracy and stability in West Africa, working closely through international and regional organisations such as the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, and the United Nations.
The minister also noted that relations between the two countries have grown stronger over the years through regular high-level engagements and cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, education, energy, defence, migration management, and cultural exchange.
He further explained that the free movement of citizens between both nations under regional frameworks has boosted economic activities and strengthened people-to-people connections.
Tuggar also acknowledged Ghana’s contributions to democratic governance and regional peace, pointing out that Nigeria and Ghana have often worked together in peacekeeping missions, mediation efforts, and conflict-prevention initiatives across West Africa.
“As Ghana marks this year’s independence celebration with the theme ‘Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,’ Nigeria commends the resilience, creativity, and determination of the Ghanaian people in advancing national development and strengthening democratic institutions,” he said.
The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Ghana through expanded economic cooperation, deeper diplomatic engagement, and stronger cultural ties.
He expressed confidence that the partnership between both countries would continue to grow, contributing to regional prosperity, economic integration, and the broader vision of a peaceful and united Africa.
