As the 2027 governorship race gathers momentum in Ogun State, four prominent female politicians are positioning themselves for a historic shot at the state’s top seat.
With Governor Dapo Abiodun set to complete his second term, political activities have intensified, with over 15 aspirants reportedly eyeing the position across party lines.
Among them, four women are drawing attention as they seek to break a long-standing barrier of Ogun State who has never elected a female governor since its creation in 1976.
Despite a strong history of female representation in leadership roles including deputy governors and lawmakers, the governorship has remained an all-male preserve.
With this Insightlinks takes a look at four female contenders who are hoping to change that narrative.
Noimot Salako-Oyedele
As the current deputy governor, Salako-Oyedele is widely seen as a strong contender. A seasoned civil engineer and real estate professional from Ogun West, she is strategically positioned, especially as the region has never produced a governor.
Although she has yet to formally declare, her growing visibility and campaign slogans suggest strong interest. However, like many deputies before her, she faces the challenge of overcoming the so-called “deputy’s hurdle” in succeeding a sitting governor.
Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello
Daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello has returned to the political scene after a long break.
A former commissioner and senator, she recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared her ambition, stirring conversations across the state.
Her supporters highlight her experience and firm leadership style, while critics question her grassroots connection after years abroad. She, however, insists her vision is centred on inclusive governance and empowering women as decision-makers.
Modele Sarafa-Yusuf
A veteran broadcaster and former aide to Governor Abiodun, Sarafa-Yusuf has made her intention clear ahead of 2027.
She previously contested in 2023 and has maintained strong ties within the APC. Presenting herself as a unifying figure, she emphasises stability, continuity, and responsible leadership.
She also frames her ambition as part of a broader effort to open doors for more women in leadership, while stressing competence over symbolism.
Bolaji Marie Odusina
Popularly known as “DeeDoc,” the US-based paediatrician is entering politics after years of humanitarian work in Ogun communities.
Known for her medical outreach programmes, she is shifting focus from healthcare advocacy to governance, with strong emphasis on maternal health, child welfare, and grassroots development.
While she enjoys goodwill among communities, analysts say she faces the task of building a strong political structure and securing a viable party platform.
With the race still wide open, political observers say the emergence of these women reflects a growing shift in Nigeria’s political space.
Whether 2027 will finally produce Ogun State’s first female governor remains uncertain but the contest is already shaping up to be one of the most closely watched in the state’s history.
