The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with plans by its local government chairmen to donate operational vehicles to the police, despite opposition from the Accord Party.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the APC said the initiative is aimed at strengthening security across the state and supporting law enforcement agencies in tackling crime.
The move, however, has drawn criticism from the Accord Party, whose state chairman, Victor Akande, warned the police against accepting the donations. He alleged that the vehicles could be linked to misappropriated public funds and cautioned that accepting them might implicate the police in alleged irregularities.
Akande further claimed that the APC-backed council chairmen are unlawfully occupying local government offices and accused them of attempting to involve the police in what he described as a “criminal arrangement.”
Responding, the APC, through its spokesperson Kola Olabisi, dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. The party argued that ensuring the safety of lives and property remains a top priority and should not be politicised.
The APC also criticised Ademola Adeleke, accusing his administration of failing to adequately address security challenges in the state over the past three years.
According to the party, the planned donation of vehicles and motorcycles is part of efforts by what it described as “legally reinstated” council chairmen to support policing and enhance community safety.
The APC further insisted that its local government chairmen remain the rightful occupants of council offices, citing ongoing legal processes and judicial backing.
The controversy comes amid a lingering leadership dispute over control of local government councils in Osun State. Chairmen elected under the APC in 2022 and those elected during the 2025 polls conducted under Governor Adeleke’s administration have continued to battle in court for legitimacy, even as the APC-backed officials currently oversee council affairs.
