The Osun State Government has officially removed Oba Gbenga Joseph Oloyede from the throne of Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government Area, citing legal and administrative grounds.
The decision, which takes immediate effect, was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi. According to the statement, the action followed due consultation, a thorough legal review, and final approval by the State Executive Council.
Oloyede’s removal is linked to his conviction in the United States over COVID-19-related fraud, for which he is currently serving a prison sentence.
The government said the move aligns with provisions of the Osun State Chiefs Law and other regulations guiding the conduct and responsibilities of traditional rulers in the state.
As part of the decision, all official instruments of authority, including the monarch’s staff of office, have been withdrawn, while the Apetumodu stool has been declared vacant.
Authorities also disclosed that steps toward selecting a new traditional ruler would be communicated in due course, in line with established customs and legal procedures.
Security agencies have been directed to maintain law and order in Ipetumodu, while residents, kingmakers, and other stakeholders were urged to remain calm and peaceful.
The state government reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of traditional institutions and ensuring due process in all chieftaincy matters.
