Premier League side Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has criticised the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, describing its decisions as unpredictable and unreliable for teams chasing success in the English top flight.

Speaking amid fresh controversy over officiating in the title race, Guardiola said VAR outcomes often feel like “a flip of a coin,” arguing that clubs cannot count on consistent decisions from match officials.

The City boss recalled several moments where his team felt unfairly treated, including defeats in the FA Cup Final over the past two seasons. He pointed to last year’s final against Crystal Palace, where goalkeeper Dean Henderson escaped a red card despite appearing to handle the ball outside the penalty area. Henderson later went on to save a penalty as Palace secured the trophy.

Guardiola also revisited City’s earlier final loss to Manchester United, insisting his side should have been awarded two penalties during the encounter.

Despite his frustration with officiating decisions, the Spaniard maintained that players must focus on what they can control on the pitch rather than dwelling on refereeing calls.

According to Guardiola, the only response to questionable decisions is for his team to improve their performances and avoid leaving results in the hands of match officials.

Manchester City are still firmly in the race for the Premier League title and will face Crystal Palace in a crucial league match before meeting Chelsea F.C. in this season’s FA Cup final at Wembley.
