A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Turaki is set to screen former President Goodluck Jonathan as its only presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general election primaries.
The faction announced that the screening exercise for all aspirants seeking various elective positions under its platform will take place on Tuesday, beginning at 10am.
According to the party, a total of 2,122 aspirants for state houses of assembly, 748 for the House of Representatives, 198 for the Senate, 112 for governorship positions and one presidential hopeful are expected to appear before the screening panel.
While the official statement did not mention the name of the lone presidential contender, sources within the party confirmed that Jonathan is the only aspirant scheduled to be screened for the presidential ticket.
The screening committee is made up of 14 members and includes prominent party figures such as former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State governor Jonah Jang and former Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Ikimi.
Other members of the panel include Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Abdul Bulama, Esther Uduehi, Tony Aziegbemi, Sunday Solari and Anicho Okoro, who will serve as administrative secretary.
The party said the composition of the committee was approved by its National Executive Committee during its 104th meeting and forms part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
Speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to active presidential politics has grown in recent weeks. On May 7, a group of supporters under the banner of the Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan staged a rally at his residence in Abuja, urging him to contest for the presidency once again.
Jonathan, however, had responded that he would consult widely before making a final decision on whether to enter the race.
