Veteran Fuji musician Remi Aluko has opened up about his long-running battle with glaucoma, revealing that the eye condition has left him unable to see.

The popular singer, fondly known as “Igwe,” made the emotional disclosure during a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, where he spoke candidly about the health challenge that has significantly affected his life.

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that damages the optic nerve, often due to increased pressure within the eye. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it remains one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide.

Speaking on his condition, Aluko revealed that despite undergoing eye surgery in the past, he has lost his sight but remains determined not to allow the illness define him.

“Anyone who says they don’t have challenges is not being truthful,” the Fuji star said. “The sickness I’m battling is glaucoma. Many people don’t know what I’ve been going through. I’m practically not different from a blind person, but I have chosen not to let the condition weigh me down.”

The singer explained that although he can no longer see, he continues to carry out his daily activities independently and remains grateful for the strength to keep moving forward.

“I can’t see with my eyes now, but I thank God that I can still take care of myself. I refuse to surrender to the reality of losing my sight,” he said.

Known for hit songs such as Ajela and Goodnews, Aluko has been a prominent figure in the Fuji music industry for decades. He began his musical journey as a teenager and released his debut album, Celebration, in 1998.

Reflecting on his personal struggles, the 48-year-old said life’s challenges have taught him valuable lessons and reminded him that there is always more to achieve.

“I cannot afford to become depressed because of my situation. My responsibility is to keep making people happy through my music, even when I’m dealing with personal pain,” he stated.

The singer also addressed public reactions to a viral video that suggested he had regained his sight. According to him, the video was created out of concern and affection by an associate who wanted to counter assumptions that he was completely incapacitated.

Aluko expressed deep appreciation to his family, friends, crew members and loyal fans for standing by him throughout the difficult period.

He reserved special praise for his wife, Noima, whom he described as a pillar of support during his health battle.

“My supporters, crew and loved ones have treated me like family. Most importantly, my wife never left my side. She stood by me through everything,” he said.

“If the people around me had abandoned me, my story would be completely different today. Instead, they continue to encourage me and never make me feel like a sick person.”

Despite the challenges posed by glaucoma, Aluko remains optimistic and committed to his music career, drawing strength from the unwavering support of those closest to him.
