The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the attempted murder of the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, Hon. Ashimiyu Ajibola, and has launched a high-level investigation into the incident.
Ajibola was reportedly attacked by two armed men riding on a motorcycle at about 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday along the MDS area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, police operatives swiftly responded after receiving a distress call and immediately deployed tactical and conventional teams to the scene.
The victim was rescued and rushed to a medical facility for treatment. The police said medical personnel have confirmed that Ajibola is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment.
The command disclosed that security operatives have launched an intensive manhunt for the attackers, who fled the scene immediately after the incident.
It added that preliminary investigations led to the recovery of exhibits from the scene, which are currently undergoing forensic analysis as part of efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Condemning the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, , described the incident as a criminal act and directed all relevant investigative units to deploy every available resource towards unraveling the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The police commissioner ordered a thorough investigation aimed at identifying those responsible, ensuring their arrest and prosecuting them in accordance with the law.
“The Command will leave no stone unturned in the ongoing investigation. We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety of residents,” the statement said.
The command also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist investigators in tracking down the suspects.
The attack has generated concern among political stakeholders and residents of Osogbo, with many calling for a swift investigation and improved security measures across the state.
Police authorities, however, assured residents that efforts are underway to apprehend the attackers and determine the motive behind the attempted assassination.
