Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has advised people to date within their financial class, arguing that relationships are often healthier when both partners share similar economic realities.
Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa said financial imbalance in relationships can create unnecessary pressure and misunderstandings, particularly for men who pursue partners whose lifestyles exceed their earning capacity.
According to her, many men choose to date women outside their financial bracket and later accuse women of being materialistic when they struggle to meet their expectations.
“I am a big believer in dating within your age and within your class. That way, there won’t be stories that touch,” she said.
Makinwa noted that many women are willing to stand by their partners during difficult times, even supporting them financially when necessary. However, she lamented that some men still end up being unfaithful with women they cannot afford.
She also warned women against assuming a man’s personality before he becomes financially successful, stressing that wealth often exposes a person’s true character rather than changing it.
“Heaven forbid you end up with a guy who hasn’t blown. The day he blows, that’s when you will know his true personality. And that scares women. Money doesn’t change people; it only reveals who they truly are,” she said.
The actress further expressed concern over what she described as the poor treatment some women receive after making significant sacrifices to support their partners on their journey to success.
