Real Madrid have finally secured the signature of highly rated Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande, ending months of speculation by completing a deal worth up to €140 million (£120 million) with RB Leipzig.
The Spanish giants confirmed on Thursday that the 19-year-old has signed a seven-year contract, bringing to an end one of the summer’s most closely watched transfer sagas after several of Europe’s elite clubs battled for his signature.
According to BBC Sport, the transfer ranks among the most expensive in Real Madrid’s history and could eclipse the fee the club agreed to pay Borussia Dortmund for England midfielder Jude Bellingham in 2023.
Diomande had emerged as one of the hottest prospects in European football following an outstanding campaign with RB Leipzig, prompting intense interest from clubs across the continent.
Paris Saint-Germain were initially considered favourites to land the Ivorian youngster, but the French champions eventually pulled out of negotiations after RB Leipzig rejected a €120 million (£102.5 million) offer.
Liverpool also made a strong attempt to sign the winger as part of their search for a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, but their opening bid of £69 million was also turned down.
After weeks of negotiations and uncertainty surrounding his future, Real Madrid eventually won the race, making Diomande the club’s sixth signing of the summer under head coach Jose Mourinho.
He joins an impressive list of new arrivals that includes Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi as Madrid continue to strengthen their squad for the new campaign.
Diomande arrives at the Santiago Bernabéu following a breakthrough 2025/26 season in Germany, where he was named the Bundesliga Young Player of the Season after scoring 12 league goals and providing eight assists. Across all competitions, he registered 13 goals and 10 assists.
The teenager also impressed on the international stage, featuring in all four of Ivory Coast’s matches at the FIFA World Cup as the Elephants reached the quarter-finals before exiting the tournament against Norway.
Diomande’s rise to the top has been remarkable. After leaving Ivory Coast to continue his football development in the United States, he joined Spanish side Leganés in 2025 before earning a move to RB Leipzig later that year, where his explosive performances quickly attracted Europe’s biggest clubs.
Blessed with exceptional pace, close control, creativity and the ability to operate on either flank, Diomande is expected to add greater attacking depth and dynamism to Real Madrid’s frontline.
Club officials believe the teenager possesses the qualities to develop into one of the world’s best players and see him as a cornerstone of the club’s long-term project as they seek continued domestic and European success.
