Professional golfers from different parts of Nigeria gathered in Ileogbo, Osun State, as the Ileogbo Golf Course and Resort hosted the fifth edition of the Independence Day Golf Kitty.
The tournament was organised as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, bringing together golfers from clubs across the country for a day of competition, recreation and celebration.
Speaking at the event, the convener, Olanrewaju Adeleke, called for increased private sector investment in sports development, saying the sector could provide greater opportunities for young Nigerians when properly supported.
According to Adeleke, private organisations have an important role to play in providing sporting facilities, organising competitions and supporting grassroots programmes.
“Sports has to be majorly private sector driven like we have in Europe and outside Nigeria. Sports is majorly driven by the private sector and we’re trying to imbibe that culture in Nigeria and it’s going gradually,” he said.
Adeleke said the Independence Day Golf Kitty had attracted golfers from different clubs across the country, describing the gathering as another way of celebrating Nigeria while promoting sportsmanship and patriotism.
“The kitty has drawn golfers from different clubs across the length and breadth of Nigeria and we are happy to celebrate independence this way and to wish Nigeria well and wish ourselves well,” he said.
He also expressed optimism that the combination of the golf course and the activities of Lanreleke Sports Academy would contribute to sports development in the country.
“With what is happening here and Lanreleke Sports Academy, by the time we put everything together, I believe it will have a positive ripple effect on sports development in the country,” Adeleke added.
Beyond the golf tournament, participants reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence, highlighting both the challenges facing the country and the progress recorded over the years.
They also called on Nigerians to remain resilient, support national development and complement the efforts of government at all levels.
The celebration extended beyond the golf course, with an Independence Day rally led by Olalekan Adeleke moving through the Ileogbo community.
Youths and students also participated in indoor games and other recreational activities organised as part of the celebration.
Outstanding golfers were presented with gifts at the end of the tournament, bringing the fifth edition of the Independence Day Golf Kitty to a close.
