A Yoruba youth group, Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide has today marked the 80th posthumous birthday of the late iconic legal luminary and human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN.

The group said If the immortal Gani were alive, prisons and police cells would have become breeding grounds for the struggle, because they believe “he will never give up the fight in favour of the people easily”.

The posthumous message was contained in a release by the President of the council, Aremo Dotun Hassan, Esq. obtained by InsightMedia in Lagos.

Hassan stated that the death of the Ondo-born lawyer has practically led to the death of struggle for justice in Nigeria, adding that “Gani’s voice roared like that of the lion priding his kingship of the jungle, scary to the evil doers and fearful to the good doers.”

He said, “We are celebrating continuous landmark achievements in our hearts of his 80 years of distinct human rights struggles. 80 years of undiluted vibrancy and meticulous advocacy and 80 years unrelenting fight towards the actualization of true federalism predicated on the rule of law, social justice, human rights, devolution of powers and succinct restructuring agenda via sporadic attacks from all fronts of the battles, for the Senior Advocate of the Masses would have left no Stone unturned by filing civil rights actions both in Nigeria and international courts on the various hydra-headed shenanigans that have ravaged the polity before and after his demise till date: ranging from corruption cases in the successive administrations of Obasanjo, Ya’radua, Jonathan and Buhari led governments, while state governments of Kaduna, Lagos and Imo, to mention a few, would have felt Ajanaku’s vehemence and opposition to their anti masses charades and ongoing debacles.

“If Omni Gani were alive, the present crop of governments at all levels would have developed by working within his(Gani’s) standard of progressive postulations.

“What can one exclaim about the rare value of a distinct legal icon than to keep learning and striving to continue on that path of honour as disciples of the true born king whose death left a huge lacuna on the frontline of achieving an egalitarian and truly democratic Nigeria”.
