The Lagos State Police Command has defended a female officer featured in a viral stop-and-search video, stating that her actions were lawful and in line with established procedures.
The video, which surfaced on X on Sunday, shows a visibly upset woman confronting the officer during a search in the Festac area of Lagos. The woman questioned the officer’s conduct as her bags, pockets, and body were examined, even refusing a request to remove her wig.
At some point in the footage, the officer also instructed the woman to stop recording and delete the video.
Reacting to the incident, the Lagos Police Command said the officer acted within the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which authorises officers to stop and search individuals in public spaces as part of crime prevention efforts.
According to the Command, the procedure followed was appropriate, noting that female suspects are to be searched by female officers, a guideline that was observed in this case.
The police further explained that such searches may appear intrusive because individuals sometimes conceal illegal items in unusual places, including wigs, clothing, and personal belongings. This, they said, makes thorough checks necessary.
While acknowledging public concerns, the Command urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with officers during stop-and-search operations, stressing that such cooperation is key to effective policing and public safety.
The incident comes amid ongoing conversations about police conduct in Nigeria. Notably, a Federal High Court ruling in Delta State recently affirmed the right of citizens to record police officers performing their duties in public, as long as it does not obstruct their work.
