The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) has destroyed illicit drugs valued at about ₦80 million following coordinated raids across multiple locations in Anambra State.
The operation, which took place on Thursday, covered areas including Onitsha and surrounding communities such as Nsugbe, Umuchu, Ojoto, Oba, Nkpor and Nkwelle Ezunaka.
Speaking during the exercise, the Managing Director of SASA, Monday Nwokoye, said the raids were carried out based on credible intelligence and form part of the agency’s efforts to clamp down on illicit drug activities and touting in the state.
“The raid underscores SASA’s commitment to dismantling illicit drug networks and curbing criminality across Anambra State. It is a significant enforcement exercise carried out after credible intelligence gathering,” he said.
Nwokoye stressed that the seized drugs were deliberately destroyed to prevent them from re-entering circulation, warning that individuals involved in drug trafficking or abuse would face strict legal consequences.
“Drugs must stop in Anambra. Anyone caught will be dealt with decisively,” he added.
He described drug dealers as major contributors to insecurity, noting that substance abuse fuels crimes such as theft and violence within communities.
The SASA boss also called on residents to support security agencies by providing useful information, emphasising that community cooperation is vital in combating crime.
He commended the state governor, Chukwuma Soludo, for supporting security operations and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sanitising the state.
“We assure Ndi Anambra that SASA will remain resolute in its mandate to eliminate drug abuse, touting, and criminal activities,” Nwokoye said.
