Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season, bringing an end to a successful nine-year spell at Anfield.
The Premier League champions confirmed on Thursday that the 32-year-old defender will depart when his contract expires this summer.
Robertson, who joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 went on to make 373 appearances for the club. During that period, the Scottish born defender established himself as one of the team’s most important players under former manager Jürgen Klopp.
The Scotland captain played a major role in Liverpool’s recent success, helping the club win two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
However, Robertson has fallen down the pecking order this season following the arrival of Miloš Kerkez, and the club has decided not to extend his contract.
His departure comes shortly after teammate Mohamed Salah also announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the campaign.
Reflecting on his time at Liverpool, Robertson said he would always cherish the memories he created at the club.
“I’ve given everything to this club over the last nine years and I leave with very few regrets,” he said. “This club and its supporters will always mean so much to me. It’s been an incredible journey.”
Liverpool’s season has been difficult both on and off the pitch. The club has struggled for consistency under manager Arne Slot and currently sits fifth in the league.
The campaign has also been overshadowed by tragedy following the death of Robertson’s close friend and teammate, Diogo Jota, in a car accident in July.
Liverpool were recently knocked out of the FA Cup after a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City and also suffered a 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Robertson said he remains fully focused on helping Liverpool finish the season strongly.
“I want to help the team and give the fans a few more special moments before I go,” he said. “Hopefully, by the end of the season, I’ll have plenty to look back on even if I’m in tears when it’s over.”
