Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has publicly endorsed Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki as his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
The governor made the declaration in a Facebook post on Tuesday, saying his decision came after what he described as extensive consultations with party leaders and structures across the state.
According to AbdulRazaq, Seriki emerged as his choice after broad engagement with stakeholders within the APC. He expressed confidence in the aspirant’s ability to lead the state, describing him as a youthful, people-focused politician with strong grassroots appeal.
The governor praised Seriki’s political influence, saying he has built significant goodwill among residents of the state and has shown strong capacity for mobilising support across communities.
AbdulRazaq said he believes Seriki possesses the qualities needed to continue the leadership of the state, adding that his endorsement was made in the interest of unity and the continued success of the ruling party.
Despite naming his preferred successor, the governor clarified that his position does not stop other aspirants from contesting the APC governorship primary scheduled for May 21, 2026.
He urged party members and leaders to support Seriki during the primary process, while stressing that the endorsement should not be interpreted as a rejection of the other governorship hopefuls seeking the party’s ticket.
According to him, the APC race in Kwara features about 16 aspirants, all of whom he described as capable and qualified individuals, but noted that only one candidate can eventually emerge.
The governor also commended the maturity and discipline displayed by the party’s governorship aspirants, praising their commitment to building on the achievements of his administration over the last seven years.
AbdulRazaq’s endorsement is expected to significantly influence the APC primary contest in Kwara, placing Yahaya Seriki among the strongest contenders to succeed him in 2027.
The governor, who is serving his second term, is expected to complete his constitutionally allowed tenure in 2027. He has also reportedly secured the APC ticket for the Kwara Central Senatorial District Senate seat and is said to be running unopposed.
